| Growing up. |
Wikipedia describes an adult as someone with the following personal characteristics BUT there is not always a concordance between the qualities cited and the physical age of the person.
Self-control - restraint, emotional control.
Stability - stable personality, strength.
Independence - ability to self-regulate.
Seriousness - ability to deal with life in a serious manner.
Responsibility - accountability, commitment and reliability.
Method/Tact - ability to think ahead and plan for the future, patience.
Endurance - ability and willingness to cope with difficulties that present themselves.
Experience - breadth of mind, understanding.
Objectivity - perspective and realism.

i don't know about the seriousness thing though.
someone once said that a wise man is one who takes light matters seriously and takes lightly serious matters.
or: laughter is a sign that one takes life seriously.
anyway!

I was once approached on the street in SF by a stranger and asked: are you a light adult or a serious child? I replied: a light adult :)
